Clare 034

The 1970's were the decade of large, sometimes giant glasses. But this does not mean that all the frames were large. More attention was given by designers to the variety of the PD among potential buyers. PD is the distance between both eye pupils and it's for the face what dress size is for the body. Another factor at stake is that high index lenses did not exist in the 1970's. Some high myopic ladies simply needed smaller frames, otherwise the lenses would become too thick. The first owner of these Metzler glasses probably had a fairly small PD like Clare and a wise optician who suggested her to go against the whims of fashion and stick to smaller frames. The glasses were supplied by Martin from Cologne who unearthed lots of great glasses during the previous decade but seems to have gone on retirement a couple years back. A pity!
