Sonia 160

Traditional myodisc lenses consist of two parts. There is a central part, circle shaped, which has the extreme correction needed by the owner of the glasses. This central part, often referred to as the "bowl", is surrounded by a carrier lens which is usually plano. The only function of the carrier lens is to fill the space between the "bowl" and the frame. The reason for this complicated construction is that extremely strong minus lenses are so concave that they take too much space, which is not only inconvenient for the wearer but also has a bad influence on his or her vision. The lenses in extremely strong minus glasses must be situated as close as possible to the eyes.

In this portrait of lovely Sonia, the position of the bowl and the carrier lens is clearly visible in front of her right eye and also partially next to her left eye.
