The weekly photo sessions and the public debate on the Seine bridges attained their peak during the winter of 1888 / 1889. Even the engineers who were responsible for the construction of the tower started to participate in the weekly debate. Needless to say, there was a lot of gossip as well and this was welcome food for journalists. Some had it that one of the engineers was more interested in the beautiful, confident young lady than in the public debate. When the young lady was questioned about this, she said:

"Don't waste your time by asking me silly questions like that. Newspapers should write about society and progress, not about gossip stories"
