During their heyday in the second half of the 1950's and the early 1960's, cat eye glasses were the norm. The opticians were hardly offering any other style. As a result, all girls and women with eyesight problems were wearing cat eye glasses, whether the style suited them or not. There were no alternatives for glasses either. The first contact lenses came on the market in 1966 and it took another year before they were widely available. Classic cat eye glasses are often described as the first wave of fashionable frames ever. This is true as far as the designers are concerned but the lack of alternatives for cat eye glasses is probably the reason why they dropped completely out of sight in the mid 1960's and never got a second wave in the following fifty years. Everyone had enough of them and they were widely regarded as a phenomenon of the past. It's like some careers higher up the ladder. The higher you rise, the deeper you fall.
