It must have been tiring for high myopic ladies to raise their arm each time they needed to see something. The famous French actress Sarah Bernhard (b 1844 - d 1923) had a prescription of minus ten but she never used her face à main in public, let alone on stage. Clare liked her acquaintance with this antique lorgnette. The lenses are -1.50 above her own prescription but she was clearly not bothered by it. Great!
