The young lady smiled and said

"Not bad, don't you think? But I will tell you about my glasses. I bought them in an Irish  charity shop, long ago. I was a curious teenager. Many of my friends became shortsighted so they had to start wearing glasses if they liked it or not. But my eyes remained perfect. Even nowadays, I still have 20/20 vision"

"That's amazing, Mia, really amazing. So you bought these glasses second hand, so that you could be just like your shortsighted friends who needed glasses?"

"Yes, I did. That's the story, up and down, crooked and straight as it was"

"And can you change colour without your glasses on?"

"I'm afraid I can't. It only happens when I have these glasses on and even then, it takes quite a bit of concentration"

"There seems to be a bit of prescription in the lenses, or am I mistaken?"

"There is a bit, but not much. Stronger glasses would have been useless to me. Before I got these, I sometimes tried the glasses from the other girls but they were too strong. They gave me headaches after a while. Besides, I did not want to ruin my eyesight. I just wanted to be like my friends who were all looking great in their glasses"

"And what about your parents? Did you wear these glasses at home?"

"No, only at school and in the company of my friends. My parents knew about the old glasses but they understood that they were just a gadget. And my eyesight always remained perfect so there was no discussion about my glasses"

"And may I ask, when did you discover the magic trick with the hue, the changing colours?"

"Well, it was actually one of my friends who noticed a change in my face, under very special circumstances. At first, she thought I was blushing. Mind you, I had no real control over it yet"

"Can you wear the glasses without changing colours?"

"Oh yes, easily. The colours are only changing when I'm really concentrating on it. So I could wear my glasses and nobody took any notice of them"

"Do you only wear them when you are practicing?"

"Only for practicing, yes. Very occasionally I am wearing them for driving a car at night or when the weather is grey and foggy, but that's about it. Hold on, I can't keep this concentration forever"
