My relation with Maura did not last - it was hard to keep it going with two seas between us - but we always remained friends. A few years ago, Maura told me on the phone that she had undergone surgery and that her new glasses were only +1.50. My reaction was: "You are probably happy with your new look. No more giant eyes". Alas. Maura exclaimed "It's a shock when I see myself in the mirror. All those wrinkles.... It had to be done but it was a wrong decision".
