Sandra 012 - 013

Last week, my mentor in photography paid me a visit and we talked "until the cows came home" and a bottle of Tullamore Dew was finished. Our talks are about history, fashion and the role played by commerce and the media. My mentor is in his early thirties and his image of the 1950's was largely influenced by the rather grotesque pictures selected by those who were not around at the time. Translated into glasses: Dame Edna, if you catch my drift. In reality, most cat eye glasses seen in the streets were more like the pair shown here by Sandra. Money was scarce, glasses were quite expensive and as a result, opticians were generally not keen to take a gamble. There were more trend followers than trend setters. Few ladies owned more than one pair of glasses and my rather eccentric granny was among the very few exceptions.
