Juliana & Juliana 009
Daughter Juliana trying to focus on her court photographer through lenses for astigmatism.... I often noticed that cylinders are more awkward to handle than a spherical strength that is way off. There is simply no way to accommodate the eyes to a wrong cylinder. Here, the model's right eye takes the lead as the cylinder is "only" -1.00 while the cylinder in the left lens is -1.75. Having said that, the frame looks really nice on her. The glasses were only used during one previous photo shoot, with Rachel (044, first weblog), in the winter of 2009 / 2010.

Both glasses shown here by mother and daughter Juliana were acquired in Germany where retro frames took over a bit later than in the Netherlands. My guess is that the glasses were made in the early or perhaps even mid 1990's. Both pairs were selected with mother Juliana in mind because of the astigmatism in the lenses but during the selection process, daughter Juliana took a fancy to the slightly cat eye shaped pair by Le club Actif. Anyway, her mother clearly felt at ease when posing in the other pair so there was no rivalry between both models :)

The photo shoot with mother and daughter Juliana was scheduled for September but it had to be postponed several times because of our hectic agendas. The photo shoot took place on a clear, cold day in mid December. While daughter Juliana wisely opted to put on a winter coat, mother Juliana displayed a great tolerance against the cold. It was great to witness how both models changed parts without many directions from my side. Here mother Juliana is taking the lead while daughter Juliana is producing a hesitant but highly effective smile. Great! A black and white version of this fine double portrait is added to show the difference in general feel with the color version.

When mother and daughter Juliana arrived at Nel's place for their photo shoot, it was immediately obvious that they were really close. One of the pleasures in this photo shoot was their strong mutual bond which blended the models' often contrasting posing styles. Here mother Juliana clearly feels at ease with her photographer while daughter Juliana is acting a touch of doubt about what might be in store with all those extravagant frames and prescriptions. It very soon turned out that daughter Juliana was really acting, displaying an incredible gamut of expressions.

Mother Juliana came into the picture during my email exchange with her daughter who mentioned that her photogenic Mom might be interested in joining the up coming photo shoot. This was a welcome idea as I had some previous experience in duo shoots, including a mother / daughter shoot. Juliana's mother is also called Juliana and I feared that this might lead to some confusion during the up tempo procedure of the photo shoot but looking back, there was no confusion when we started working.
The only problem arising during the preparations for the photo shoot was when the glasses prescription of both models was sent to me. Unlike her daughter, Mother Juliana has an uncommon prescription - hardly a spherical Rx but strong astigmatism (around 3.00) which would narrow down the options. A thorough search through my collection yielded a dozen glasses that came anywhere near her prescription but some of these might not match the model's rather wide PD (66) so I also packed some glasses with other prescriptions that might do no harm.
Here mother Juliana is posing in a striking pair made by Silhouette in 1981. The glasses gave her monovision as only one lens had the cylindrical strength and an axis that was fairly compatible. Fortunately, she found out that the glasses gave her fair eyesight. Working with mother Juliana enabled me to use a number of glasses that were not featured in any previous photo shoot. The Silhouette pair is a fine example.

Daughter Juliana is an experienced international model, actress and singer who reacted from Canada after reading my casting call for models from the Dublin area in August. She would spend holidays in Ireland soon and assumed that I was based there. Our schedules in Ireland did not coincide but we kept contact about doing a photo shoot in the Netherlands as her Mom lives not too far from Nel's place. Small world....
Daughter Juliana has a very mild prescription and she occasionally wears glasses when her eyes are tired. So my approach for the selection of her glasses was the usual receipt - starting with mild prescriptions and then head towards some stronger glasses. Here she is posing in a nameless pair from the late 1980's or early 1990's, acquired during one of my travels in Co. Mayo. The difference between both lenses (L + 1.25 / R +2.50) in these glasses would lead me to believe that their first owner bought them as a cheap alternative for bifocals.
