Nefeli 113

Frames in the mid 1960's were fairly small and compact. This trend put an end to the cat eye era in 1964 and it was followed by the arrival of larger frames in 1967. The glasses shown here by Nefeli are a fine example of that short-lived trend. However, the material sets this pair apart from the mainstream in frame design of the mid 1960's. These glasses are not made of plastic but of wood. I will never forget seeing these wooden frames in the shop window of an Amsterdam optician. This happened in 1966 and it was really amazing. However, three months later the glasses disappeared from the shop and I never saw them elsewhere, neither in the shops or in the streets. Apparently nobody was interested in them so the optician simply took his loss. Forty years later I came across this pair in a charity shop in the eastern part of Holland. Apparently at least one lady had the courage to buy wooden glasses in 1966....
