"It was the upper strata of society who wore pince-nez during the heyday of this eyewear in the early 20th century. A survey of the 1911 Brown University yearbook revealed that of those who wore glasses, 70% chose pince-nez. Over a century ago, eyewear was not seen as a fashion item but as a medical necessity that distracted from one's appearance. Hence the minimalism of pince-nez was truly appreciated". This quote comes from a contemporary weblog run by two Americans who are trying to contribute to a revival of the pince-nez.
Severine found it an interesting experience to try a pince-nez from my collection.
