Iris 075
In this series, the viewer is invited to take place in a time machine and be transported back to 1979. Are you ready?
Imagine to yourself a beautiful young lady - let's call her Celia - with a passion for big hats. The young lady just came back from her optician to pick up her new glasses. After an increase from minus two to minus three, her optician told her that she really should wear her new glasses full time. She arrived home and before she could take off her hat, the door bell rang. A friend arrived earlier than expected for a cup of tea and a chat. The weather being fine, the young lady suggested that they might have tea in her sunny garden.
"Celia dear, I see that you have new glasses! They really suit you. I like the way the frame follows the shape of your eyebrows"
"Thank you, Carola"
"You don't look as confident as you did last week, or am I mistaken? What's the matter, dear?"
"My optician told me that from now on, I have to wear my glasses full time. They are a bit stronger than my old glasses"
"But you were half expecting that, weren't you? A few months ago, I noticed that you were holding the newspaper closer to your eyes than you used to do. And you complained that your glasses were not as good as they used to be. You were squinting all the time, even with your glasses on"
"You are right, dear, absolutely right. I never had a problem with my glasses, you know, glasses are kind of nice. You can change the way you look, without glasses, with glasses.... I always liked to toy a bit with that...."
"And I was always jealous because my eyes are perfect! I can't change my looks the way you do. Hats don't suit me either. You always look so chic in your hats"
"Thank you, dear. But if I have to wear my glasses all the time, I can't change my looks the way I used to do. And I am in doubt if I chose the right pair of glasses.... They are white and they looked great when I tried them in the shop, but now I wonder if they match with my hats"
"Ah, so it's the hats you are worried about, and not the glasses?"
"Yes, that might be the problem. What do you think, how do I look in glasses with my black hat on?"
"I like the contrast, there is nothing wrong with the combination. But why don't you try your other hats and see how they suit you in your new glasses? By the way, what made you decide about these white glasses?"
"You never guess...."
"Tell me, please. It sounds interesting"
"The glasses have a name stamped on them. They come from a German company called Rodenstock. My optician told me that the company gives names to all glasses they make"
"And may I ask, what are they called?"
"My optician showed me lots of these German glasses. Each pair had a different name. Anja, Anita and so on. Beleive it or not, but there were even a couple of pairs called Carola"
"And your new glasses? You don't tell me that...."
"No, no. Neither of the Carola glasses suited me. But they might suit you"
"You are making me jealous again.... Perhaps I should go to your optician for an eye test but I'm fairly sure that my eyes are still OK"
"You could buy them as non prescription sunglasses"
"Sounds good, dear. But you are drifting away from the subject.... Can I have a look at your glasses?"
"They are called Celia and that's what tipped the balance"
"Brilliant, absolutely brilliant! Shall we check how the glasses combine with your other hats?"
"Thank you dear, that would be grand"
