The "half moon" is an optical effect particular to blended myodisc glasses. It's only visible from a special vantage point and this is illustrated by these two portraits of brave Katie facing nineteen diopters. The lower portrait has no half moon but the upper portrait has it, next to the model's right eye. It has to do with the transition zone between the ultra strong "bowl" and the surrounding carrier lens. Here the half moon is surrounded my the dark image of the model's hair.
